Lives in open grassy plainsor well grassed woodlands. They are close grazers, inquisitive and sociable animals highly dependent on water. Stallions fight fiercely and their bites inflict terrible wounds. Height 130 cm., mass 270 kg., gestation 12 months, one young, lifespan 22 years.
